Ballots are still being counted as of this morning, but Chaffee County, in the space of 36 hours went from 32.9 percent voter turnout to 59.8 percent.

There were 9,472 ballots cast, from a county active voter roll of 15,840. The sudden upsurge in voting delighted the County Clerk and Recorder Lori Mitchell, who provided an update shortly after 11:00 p.m. last night, “We are done for tonight. I will check in with everyone tomorrow to give an update of how many ballots are out there to be cured and what ballot styles they are. I think we processed over 3,000 mail ballots today.”

Chaffee County Clerk and Recorder Lori Mitchell.

Northern Chaffee Library District Leads Successful Ballot Questions

Unofficial results show the public approved Ballot Question 6A – which asked for voter approval to expand the Buena Vista Library, by a substantial margin: 2,519 votes in favor of the library expansion, and 1,743 votes against.

In Salida, the confusing Ballot Question 300, went down to defeat; with more than  60 percent of the city’s voters rejecting the measure. The vote against it was 1,663, to 1,102 voters who voted for the measure. If it had passed, it would have created a two-tier fee system for the city’s short-term rental properties in residential areas, passing the licensing fees to non-Chaffee residents who own short-term rental properties in the city, and lowering fees for resident STR owners, while setting a flat $5.00/bedroom/night occupational lodging tax.
