As of Saturday afternoon, July 31, the “Christmas in July” Give campaign for Ark Valley Voice has reached $5,000 in donations. All of it from individuals and readers who believe in the role of the free press in a strong democracy.
The campaign’s $10,000 goal continues; Poncha Market has just pledged a $500 match donation to our Christmas In July campaign. But we have to raise $500 in matching donations to unlock the match.
We hope that in the next few days more loyal readers will show us they appreciate our unflinching focus on fact-based news and our award-winning coverage of county, regional, state, and national issues; from government transparency to climate change, from housing issues and COVID-19 struggles to the use of our natural resources. Investigative journalism takes a lot of time and resources to accomplish. It takes dedication to get to the bottom of issues. It takes asking hard questions, not being afraid to pursue the sources and leads that get us to what is really going on. Democracy needs good journalism. Our founding fathers wrote our role into the protections of the constitution. Clearly, they weren’t afraid to face the hard truths of governing, without the watchdog role of a free press.
