The Colorado Republican Party appears poised to ignore its own Republican Colorado presidential primary set for March 5, 2024, and late Sunday, January 14, it endorsed ex-President Donald Trump for the state’s Republican primary candidate. The move comes nearly two months before Colorado voters are scheduled to cast ballots.

Not only is the move unprecedented, the state GOP’s central committee vote to endorse Trump was made over the objections from several Republicans. Their objection: the party has a policy of staying neutral in primaries and this move is in direct contradiction to that policy.

One could ask – does the Colorado Republican party have any policies anymore, or is it just subject to whatever Trump wants next? Will Colorado voters actually decide their primary, or will the party endorsement hold sway?

The move adds to what is already a tumultuous season for state-level Republicans. All three House Legislators are vacating their elected positions: Ken Buck and Doug Lamborn are stepping down after multiple terms. Lauren Boebert has apparently decided that the race in her Third Congressional District is too hot to handle.

In the last election, she won it by little more than 500 votes against a surprising showing by Democratic party candidate Adam Frisch, who is running again. In the past few weeks, Boebert has announced that she will run for Lamborn’s Fifth Congressional District seat. But she’ll face primary competition there against none other than Colorado Republican Party leader Dave Williams.
