The Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA) and the Greater Arkansas River Nature Association (GARNA) are calling the community to action for the 28th annual Clean Up Green Up event on Saturday, May 18. Volunteers will gather to help spruce up the Arkansas Valley’s numerous recreation and natural areas in honor of Colorado Public Lands Day.

Volunteer work hours during the Clean Up Green Up event can be counted towards the 48 volunteer hours required to receive State Parks Pass. For eligibility, volunteers must pre-register by following this link: www.bit.ly/AHRACleanupGreenup

Volunteers can also register between 8:30 and 9 a.m. Saturday morning in Cotopaxi, Buena Vista and Salida. The registration locations are AHRA Headquarters, 307 W. Sackett in Salida; Buena Vista Community Center Aspen Room at 715 East Main Street; and the Cotopaxi Arkansas River KOA at 21435 U.S. Hwy 50.

All volunteers will be provided a picnic lunch in Buena Vista, Salida and Cotopaxi. Volunteers who preregister will also be entered into a drawing featuring prizes from local businesses. Prizes will include rafting gear, gift cards, gift baskets, toys and beer from Clean Up Green Up sponsors.

The event sponsors include Soulcraft Brewing, Colorado Raft Frame Supply, Monarch Mountain, Anderson Motors, Riverboat Works, Moonlight Pizza and Brewpub, Kaleidoscope Toys, Natural Grocers and Southwest Conservation Corps.

There is an extensive list of public lands needing clean-up. The list can be previewed by following this link: www.bit.ly/AHRACleanupGreenupSites.

The Chaffee County Landfill will be accepting all normal trash items on Saturday. A dumpster will also be placed in front of the AHRA headquarters on West Sackett Avenue. The dumpster will accept trash items found during the event, including tires and electronics. Any items found on public lands during the event can be left at any of the AHRA sites along the river, or next to the bathrooms. The AHRA and GARNA request that volunteers refrain from placing items next to the roads leading AHRA sites. These sites include Railroad Bridge, Ruby Mountain, Fisherman’s Bridge, Hecla Junction, Salida East and the Rincon and Vallie Bridges.
