A county-wide conference called “Engaging in Aging,” focusing on aging well no matter your age, is set for Saturday, May 19, at the Chaffee County Fairgrounds.

“We’re calling it a community fair focused on ages 25 to 105,” said Marilyn Bouldin, one of the many volunteers helping to organize the event. “It isn’t just for people who society calls senior citizens. It’s for everyone who wants to stay active and involved and age well. Isn’t that all of us?”

The free, day-long event has been organized by two local nonprofits, A Little Help and Sage Generation, in conjunction with Chaffee County Public Health, Chaffee County Department of Human Services, Upper Arkansas Area Agency on Aging and Columbine Manor Care Center.

Beginning at 9 a.m. and running to 4 p.m. on May 19 in the main exhibit hall on the Chaffee County Fairgrounds, the event features a sold-out exhibit area, a day-long roster of educational presentations and forums, food trucks and dozens of information tables staffed by community organizations.

“We’re thrilled with the community support and the collaborative process that developing Engaging in Aging has been,” said Andrea Carlstrom, director of Chaffee County Public Health. “We’re all aging. Let’s celebrate and enjoy it.”

“We’re encouraging the community to come out and learn more,” said Dee Dubin, a community volunteer with A Little Help, an organization dedicated to connecting neighbors so the entire neighborhood can thrive. “I think people are going to be thrilled with the variety of presentations. We’ll have everything from info about the recreational activities, to seminars on diabetes, to talks on dealing with aging skin and cancer prevention.”

Sage Generation, another major organizer of the event, is a community and public health effort whose mission is to provide resources so that seniors can thrive in their chosen living situation, including remaining in their own homes. Carlstrom called attention to the collaboration behind the scenes to bring Engaging in Aging to the community.

“Our local agencies are invested in our seniors, and this event is just one example of how dedicated they are.”

Funds raised from the Engaging in Aging event will support local nonprofits that serve seniors, as well as provide seed money for future senior fairs.
