Due to sustained high winds at the Chaffee County Landfill, the landfill will be closed as of 12:45 p.m. today, May 6th. You are asked to please contact the landfill at 719.539.3738 for current status prior to making a trip to the landfill, as the variable wind conditions may affect status throughout the day.
Current weather conditions for Salida indicate that high winds may also prevail on Tuesday, May 7, with winds from the West at 25-35 miles per hour with gusts greater than 50 miles per hour possible .

Chaffee County Landfill Closed Today
In accordance with Colorado regulations, the Chaffee County Landfill will cease accepting refuse during the following conditions:
- When sustained winds of 40 miles per hour (measured at 5 to 10 minute intervals) are measured for a 30 minute duration. The Landfill will open when winds are measured at less than 35 miles per hour for 15 minutes.
- When wind gusts equal or exceed 55 miles per hour. Customers will be detained at the gate until the gust subsides.
- As otherwise deemed necessary by Chaffee County to prevent nuisance conditions as required by regulations.
