From 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 17, the Deerhammer Tasting Room in Buena Vista will be live screening the 2024 National Paddling Film Festival (NPFF). The public is invited to check out this year’s entries while enjoying food and drinks from Deerhammer. A portion of the proceeds from drink sales during the event will be donated to the Buena Vista Whitewater Park and American Whitewater.

Deerhammer Distillery is located at 321 East Main Street in Buena Vista. The business was founded by Amy and Lenny Eckstein in 2010. Deerhammer specializes in whiskey production with their American Single Malt Whiskey as their cornerstone product.

“When we decided to pursue our dream we knew that it could only happen in Buena Vista,” state the Ecksteins on their website. “There’s something very special about this place and we hope to play a small part in shaping the character of this town that we love so much.”

According to Deerhammer, their American Single Malt Whiskey “starts its life as a porter-style 100 percent malted barley mash, it’s further shaped by open-air fermentation before passing through our squat-head copper pot stills and maturing in charred heavy toast/light char new white oak. Boasting a complex profile with notes of coffee, chocolate, and dark fruit, you won’t mistake it for its Scottish or Irish counterparts.”

In addition to drinks from Deerhammer and films from the festival, NPFF also hosts an online auction from Monday, February 12 to Sunday, February 18. The auction offers opportunities for paddling fans to grab gear, merchandise, experiences, and art. Proceeds from the auction are donated to organizations dedicated to river conservation and access globally.

Auction items range from a special commemorative edition of Kayaks to Hell featuring cartoons by William Nealy with a starting bid of $8 to a week-long kayak trip to Ecuador with a starting bid of $900. Other items include a medium American Whitewater Pyranha Machno kayak, a Watershed Chattooga bag, a hand-drawn map of the Nantahala River by William Nealy, and more.

The auction catalog can be viewed online here.

The in-person main event is set for 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time at the Capital Plaza Hotel in Frankfort, Kentucky. It features a chili cook-off, opportunities to view items in the online auction, vendor booths, and theatre-style viewing of films.

For those unable to make it to Deerhammer for the NPFF screening and River Park fundraiser in Buena Vista, online tickets cost $5. They include access to the on-demand portal from February 10 to February 24 and a link to the livestream of the in-person event.
