Convened as 1041 Permit Authority, the Chaffee Board of County Commissioners will meet beginning at 1:00 p.m. MST on May 18 to continue the public hearing for the Nestlé Waters North America 1041 permit application (a company that has changed its name during the review to BlueTriton).

Larry Lawrence, Resource Manager for Nestle Waters North America, left, speaks with members of 350 Central Colorado adjacent to the 100,000-gallon storage tank at the company’s Johnson Village pumping facility during a spring 2020 tour . Other attendees included Jennifer Swacina, organizer of local opposition to Nestle’s 1041 permit extension.

The topic of this continuation is the review of an economic evaluation, requested by Nestlé as a counter to the Harvey Economics Report, ordered by Chaffee County and presented during the May 4 session, entitled
BBC Economic Evaluation RMSO Permit Renewal 05132021 .

If approved, the 1041 permit would allow BlueTriton to continue pumping spring water from its Ruby Springs, conveying it via a transmission pipeline to its Johnson Village loading facility, then trucking it to their Denver-based bottling plant.

This public hearing has been continued multiple times. This latest meeting continues from May 4, which continues from April 20, March 16, February 16, 2021 and was originally continued from Dec. 15, 2020.

The application for what may be as long as a ten-year permit renewal has been the subject of conflict; with some environmentalists lining up on one side, while business, economic and water resource entities have presented a counter-narrative.
