The Salida School Board met again on Tuesday, July 14 to discuss the draft plan for the upcoming school year. The goal of the board is to support the educational needs of every individual student, even as the district copes with the impact of the coronavirus known as COVID-19.

One of the major purposes of the discussion that evening was community feedback. According to the Salida School Board, the board is working hard to communicate with the community to best meet the needs of each child.

Superintended David Blackburn noted that “the most common feedback is the verbal feedback that is positive, that is supportive of where we’re at.”

As previously reported by Ark Valley Voice, the Board released the accompanying graphic that breaks down what each phase would look like.

During the meeting, the board felt it may be best to open in the yellow phase (identified as “Halvsies” and outlined in the accompanying grid). But no final decisions have been made and Blackburn reiterated that edits to the draft are still ongoing.

The majority felt they need more time to reflect on community comment and revisit the issue at hand and will discuss a concrete decision as well as masking in a special meeting on July 28.

The Board is adamant that the reopening of schools focuses on safety and risk management.
