The League of Women Voters of Chaffee County (LWVCC) and the Sangre de Cristo Electric Association (SDCEA) have issued an invitation to a public forum with SDCEA’s board candidates from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30. The event will beheld in the Buena Vista Community Center Pinon Room (715 East Main Street). The LWVCC and SDCEA are co-sponsoring this event.

The SDCEA election is scheduled to conclude on Monday, June 3. Members will have until 1:00 p.m. that day to vote online. Members can also mail in their ballots but they will need to arrive by June 3.

Two seats will be decided in this election. One is a contested at-large seat and the other is an unopposed rural Chaffee/Lake County representative seat.

Chaffee County residents Sandra Long and Ed Simmons are candidates for the open at-large seat. This seat was vacated last year after the passing of board member Dan Daly.

Chaffee County resident Charles A. Abel II is running unopposed as the incumbent candidate for the Rural Chaffee/Lake County seat.

Paper ballots were mailed to all SDCEA members on April 24. SDCEA members can also cast their votes online and find more information about the election on SDCEA’s website. One ballot is cast per SDCEA membership.

More information on the LWVCC is available on their website.

A separate SDCEA candidate forum is also scheduled for 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on May 16 in the SDCEA Community Room (29780 U.S. 24 North, Buena Vista). At this forum the candidates will present their platforms and be available to talk with attendees to answer questions.

Prior to attending either forum, attendees can familiarize themselves with the candidate’s answers to SDCEA’s questionnaire:

Voter Voices 2024, Staying Engaged in Elections

To help guide elections coverage this year, readers are asked to scan the QR code, which is included to the right in this article or located in the sidebar of any page on Ark Valley Voice’s (AVV) website currently. Alternatively, click on the following link to fill out the Voter Voices Survey.

Voter Voices 2024 asks Colorado voters what their priorities are in this election cycle so that AVV can report and write more responsive, representative, and fair stories.

Additionally, AVV has committed to “engaged elections” grounded in what voters want candidates to discuss as they compete for votes; not simply what the candidates want to talk about.

What issues matter most to SDCEA members this year in the upcoming Board of Directors election?

What questions do SDCEA members think we should ask the candidates?

What do members need to know to vote confidently?

If a question is related to the voting or election process, AVV will do its best to research the answer and publish a story with the details. If questions are intended for candidates to consider, AVV will reach out to them directly and try to get those answers before election day.

To submit a question, “comment” on this story below, or send an email to ArkValleyVoice@gmail.com.

If a question is used to generate a story, credit will be provided directly in the article. If the inquirer would like to remain anonymous, AVV can allow that; however, as a news organization, AVV must know the identity of the person asking. To remain anonymous, send the question by email and include a request for anonymity when the story is published.
