Around the world, today is International Women’s Day — a global day for women everywhere to celebrate how far we’ve come in respect, recognition, and progress  — and how far women have to go.

Last night the GOP rebuttal to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union message was delivered by Alabama Senator Katy Britt — from the kitchen. Not only was the message strange, but it seemed to be a throwback. It isn’t so long ago that national advertisers selling packaged goods always began with a woman in the kitchen, blissfully dishing up food to a smiling husband.

These days, many American women now subscribe to the message embroidered on a pillow in the office of elected women; “A woman’s place is in the House — and the Senate.”

While women’s social, economic, cultural, and political achievements are recognized in more countries than ever, this day is also considered a call to action. For women around the world, today is a call  to support and lift up all women, not just those fortunate enough to be born in certain countries, with economic advantages and access to education, but for those who are excluded from opportunity.

This year, the theme for the 2024 International Women’s day is how to #InspireInclusion.

Today, or this weekend, perhaps take a moment to remember the women who have made a difference in your lives — and say a thank you — out loud or silently, for what they have accomplished.
