The Winemaker Challenge International Competition Recognizes Holy Cross Abbey Wines

Local winemakers Holy Cross Abbey has been notified that seven of their wines have received gold medals at the Winemaker Challenge International Wine Competition in San Diego, California and another seven wines have received silver medals.

“This competition differs from others because the judges are fellow Winemakers,” said Winemaker Jeff Stultz. “To receive such high awards, judged under much scrutiny, is definitely an honor.”

The seven gold medalist wines vinted by the Winery at Holy Cross Abbey in Cañon City:

  • Is 2022 Chardonnay (93 points)
  • 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve (91 points)
  • As Above So Below: The Theurgist (91 points)
  • As Above So Below: The Astrologist (90 points)
  • Riesling (90 points)

Renowned Sommelier and wine columnist Robert Whitely started The Winemaker Challenge Competition fourteen years ago, along with several other international wine competitions in California. Robert passed away in 2021, but his memory lives on in all the wine competitions he founded.

About the Gold Medal Wines

2022 Chardonnay
Loaded with beautiful, ripe fruit flavors of pear, green apple, citrus and hints of oak.

2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve
Ripe black and red berries on the nose and palate. Sweet reception and a pleasant mouthfeel. Hints of mocha, caramel, cinnamon, and toasted oak. Bright tannins and a nice, long finish.

As Above So Below: The Theurgist
Light to medium bodied with polished tannins. Abundant red fruit and lightly oaked like a Chianti or Pinot Noir. Fun and approachable — magically delightful.

As Above So Below: The Astrologist
Snappy acidity up front with a semi-sweet mineral finish. Reminiscent of carnival lemonade, fun and refreshing in a way Nostradamus would never have predicted.

Riesling
Snappy acidity up front and a mineral finish. Full of honeysuckle, pear, apricot and nectarine in the nose and mouth.

Vineyard Sunset
A White Zinfandel blended with a splash of Riesling. Light and crisp, with hints of citrus, guava and watermelon in the nose.

Wild Cañon Harvest
A sweet rose table wine, light and fruity.
