The Salida Chamber of Commerce has put out a warning this afternoon that there are counterfeit $100 bills floating around Chaffee County and surrounding counties.

If you are a business and receive a $100 bill, there is a test to see if it is a real $100 bill. Hold the bill up to the light.   You’ll see an embedded thread running vertically to the left of the portrait. The thread is imprinted with the letters USA and the numeral 100 in an alternating pattern and is visible from both sides of the note. The thread glows pink when illuminated by ultraviolet light.

If you are unsure of the authenticity of a bill, ask for an alternate form of payment.  If customers do not comply, call the Police Department.
