Outdoor enthusiasts and environmental stewards without plans this Saturday, September 23, break out those planners. In celebration of the 30th annual National Public Lands Day, the Chaffee Recreation Adopters are hosting a volunteer-based campsite maintenance day, with a celebratory picnic afterwards.

The Rec Adopters are putting on the celebration alongside a handful of trail stewardship organizations, stakeholders and landowners, such as Salida Mountain Trails, the Greater Arkansas River Nature Association (GARNA) the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the U.S. Forest Service and the Arkansas Headwater Recreation Area.

Volunteers will be working at the BLM-owned Burmac dispersed camping area. The actual work portion of the day will begin at 9:00 a.m. and go until 12:00 noon. At noon the social cookout portion of the day’s celebration will kick off.

Saturday will also feature an appearance from GARNA’s Chaffee County Mobile Gear Library (CMGL), a roving depository of outdoor gear, available to those hoping to get their feet wet in any number of outdoor recreational activities.

Per GARNA, “The Chaffee Mobile Gear Library is more than just a gear lending program, it is an inclusive and empowering outdoor community. CMGL strives to support disinvested communities, uplift BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities, and foster programming that centers around community, skill building, and outdoor empowerment.”

Chaffee Rec Adopters are a coalition of county residents and friends thereof who work together to keep the outdoors, as those at Envision Chaffee County are fond of saying, “fun, wild, and going.” To learn more about the adopters, click here.
