In the week leading up to April 16, Ark Valley Voice was one of 22 media all across the state of Colorado to participate in COLab, the Colorado News Collaborative. This historic collaboration united journalists across these news organizations to document a single day during the coronavirus pandemic known as COVID-19 — April 16. As it turns out, it was the single deadliest day of the pandemic in the nation, so far.

Members of the Colorado Media Collaborative (COLab) met via Zoom to coordinate the massive, state-wide effort to document a single day in the life of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Spread out across the state, more than 100 journalists from these 22 organizations documented what that day was like as Coloradans dealt with the crisis; from the metro areas to rural areas, healthcare organizations, schools, local governments, cultural organizations, small businesses, and nonprofits.

Since the launch of COVID Diaries Colorado on April 26, more than 50,000 people have viewed the diaries, and that number continues to grow every day.

Ark Valley Voice contributed 11 stories to the project, written by five of our writers. We talked about people’s hopes, their fears, what they have learned, and if they had found any silver linings in the human disaster.

From the many photos and videos contributed to the project, the Colorado News Collaborative has developed this video of Coloradans we interviewed for the COVID Diaries project, answering this question: “What’s been hardest for you during the pandemic?”

While we in the media normally compete with each other, this project marked a first time in Colorado history. It marked a moment when Colorado journalists worked in collaboration across media and markets to present a multi-faceted story about how this life-changing event has affected our lives.

Based upon our newsroom debriefing meeting last week, there will be other such collaborative efforts in the future.

Although at the moment many of us are experiencing furloughs due to the COVID-19 impacts on our newsroom budgets, we hope to work together again, having determined that for the public good — we can work together to tell the stories about the factors affecting our lives, our businesses, and our futures.
