The last theater production of the season opens April 8 and the opening scene could be called …“Einstein and Picasso walk into a bar….”

The Sopris Theatre Company at Colorado Mountain College (CMC) will present “Picasso at the Lapin Agile,” by Steve Martin, an absurdist comedy set in early 20th century Paris, at the New Space Theatre at CMC Spring Valley, from April 8 to April 24.

This long-running off-Broadway play by the popular actor, comedian and screenwriter Steve Martin centers on two international figures: Physicst Albert Einstein and artist Pablo Picasso sitting in a Parisian café in 1904. The era: just before the renowned scientist transformed physics with his theory of relativity and the celebrated painter set the art world afire with cubism.

It is Martin’s first comedy for the stage, and it must be admitted that he plays fast and loose with his facts, fame, and fortune as these two geniuses muse on the century’s achievements and prospects, as well as other fanciful topics.

“Picasso at the Lapin Agile” will run at 7:00 p.m. April 8, 9, 15, 16, 22, and 23 and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. April 10, 17, and 24 at CMC Spring Valley in Glenwood Springs, located at 3000 County Road 114.

Admission is $20 for adults and $15 for seniors and students, as well as CMC employees.

Livestream performances will be held on April 10, 16, and 22. Those tickets are $20. All tickets are available for purchase at https//coloradomtn.edu/theatre or 970-947-8177.
