The Continental Divide Trail Coalition is hosting its fourth annual Southbound Trail Daze Celebration in Leadville, beginning tomorrow, September 13, and lasting through Friday, September 15.

The festivities will kick off at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday in Leadville’s Pastime Saloon with a night of trail trivia and other puzzles, complete, course, with prizes for the winners.

The following day, Thursday, will feature a panel of outdoor experts at the Golden Burro discussing equitable outdoor recreation. The panel discussion will begin at 6:00 p.m. and go until 10:00 p.m.

Per the trail coalition, Thursday’s expert panel is made up of Hannah Green, Legend, and Mario Varela. There will also be tables for local outdoor gear makers.

In the final night of Southbound Trail Daze 2023, trail enthusiasts can head to the Old Church at 801 Harrison Ave for a movie night, beginning at 6:00 p.m. Leadville’s own Blue Flower Candies and Provisions will be providing the obligatory snacking options.

Leadville is, according to the Trail Coalition, known to thru-hikers on the Continental Divide Trail (CDT) as the “spiritual halfway point” of the roughly 3,100-mile-long trail.

The CDT is one of the most famous contiguous hikes in all of the United States. Hikers can follow it from the border of Mexico all the way up to the Canadian boundary in Montana.

In 2019, Leadville was officially incorporated into the Trail Coalition as a “gateway town.” These are towns along the CDT that are welcoming to those traveling along the trail, complete with ambassadors and friendly businesses happy to accommodate passers-through.
