The Chaffee Recreation Taskforce will meet beginning at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February  6. The focus of the meeting will be a review and discussion of the county’s proposed 2024 Rec Plan, and how it will relate to specific organizations.

A key piece of information to inform the conversation will be the specialized analysis of the 2023 Chaffee Rec Re-Survey and the Chaffee County Trails and Routes Report. At the request of Chaffee Recreation Taskforce members, data from this report was analyzed in greater detail for themes related to trails and routes.

The request for further analysis was made by trails advocacy group leaders to help inform stakeholders participating in the 2024 Chaffee County Trails System & Conservation Plan. The report is limited to the assessment of 521 comments received from the survey that were strictly related to trails, routes, roads, and their user groups. The analysis focuses on a narrow portion of the more than 4,200 write-in comments received. This report should be viewed as a specialized subset of the full survey report.

The trails feedback included comment sections with write-in opportunity for two open-ended questions:

1. Please describe any change (in the quality of your Chaffee County outdoor recreation experiences over the past 5 years) in a few words.

2. Please describe any changes in the quality of Chaffee County natural resources (water, wildlife, forests, agricultural landscapes) over the past 5 years in a few words.

There was good news: a majority of the comments (74 percent) acknowledge that the current trail system is very good and has been improved, especially in and around Buena Vista and Salida. Improvements include more trails, better-maintained trails, and better signage.

All 2023 survey comments related to trails and routes are available by request to info@envisionchaffeecounty.org.
