Chamber music for a Sunday matinee

The Walden Chamber Music Society presents its second concert of the season at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11, at Salida’s SteamPlant Event Center. At 2:00 p.m., prior to the concert itself, pianist Jo Boatright will give a half-hour “Informance” explaining the music to be performed, with musical demonstrations on the piano.

Selections from the Classical and Post-Romantic periods will be performed by members of the Walden Chamber Music Ensemble.

M. Haydn, Reger and Mozart

Michael Haydn (1737-1806), Max Reger (1873-1916), and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) will be presented on piano, cello, viola, and violin. Michael Haydn was the younger brother of Franz Joseph Haydn. A prolific composer of instrumental music (43 symphonies plus quintets, sonatas and others), he also created a lengthy catalog of sacred and secular vocal works.

Reger, according to Wikipedia “worked as a concert pianist, as a musical director at the Leipzig University Church, as a professor at the Royal Conservatory in Leipzig, and as a music director at the court of Duke Georg II of Saxe-Meiningen. He first composed mainly Lieder, chamber music, choral music and works for piano and organ.”

A Post-Romantic, “his works could be considered retrospective as they followed classical and baroque compositional techniques such as fugue and continuo. The influence of the latter can be heard in his chamber works which are deeply reflective and unconventional.”

His work promises to provide an interesting contrast between the style of both Haydn and Mozart and a chance to hear music not often performed.
