Engaged Elections: Voter Voices Matter

Ark Valley Voice has committed to “engaged elections” grounded in what voters want candidates to discuss as they compete for votes; not simply what the candidates want to talk about.

So today we’re asking readers who are Sangre de Cristo Electric Association (SDCEA) members, what issues matter most to you this year in the upcoming Board of Directors election?

What questions do SDCEA members think we should ask the candidates?

What do members need to know to vote confidently?

If a question is related to the voting or election process, we will do our best to research the answer and publish a story with the details. If questions are intended for candidates to consider, we will reach out to them directly and try to get those answers for you before election day.

To submit a question, “comment” on this story, directly on our website, or send an email to ArkValleyVoice@gmail.com. We will research and publish the answers.

If your question is used to generate a story, we will credit you directly in the article. If you would like to remain anonymous, this is something that we can allow, but as a news organization, we must know your identity. Send the question by email and make a note that you prefer to be anonymous when the story is published.

SDCEA Election Information

The SDCEA election is scheduled for Monday, June 3. Members will have until 1:00 p.m. that day to vote online. Members can also mail in their ballots but they will need to arrive by June 3.

Two seats will be decided in this election. One is a contested at-large seat and the other is an unopposed rural Chaffee/Lake County representative seat.

Chaffee County residents Sandra Long and Ed Simmons are candidates for the open at-large seat. This seat was vacated last year after the passing of board member Dan Daly.

Chaffee County resident Charles A. Abel II is running unopposed as the incumbent candidate for the Rural Chaffee/Lake County seat.

In addition to our coverage, there will be several opportunities for voters to get to know the candidates better. Candidate forums are scheduled from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for the following dates and venues:

  • April 25 in Westcliffe at Cliff Lanes (25 Main Street).
  • May 16 in Buena Vista at the SDCEA Community Room (29780 US Highway 24 North).

The League of Women Voters of Chaffee County (LWVCC) will be holding a separate candidate forum from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30 in the Buena Vista Community Center’s Pinon Room (715 East Main Street).

More information about the election and the candidates is available in AVV’s previous coverage announcing the election. Detailed information about the election is available at MyElectric.coop.
