With wildfires burning to the south and west of the county in Arizona, New Mexico, and a fire in the city of Monte Vista on Wednesday, the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office put out an urgent message late Thursday afternoon: don’t start any open fires.

The message read “Per Chaffee County Sheriff John Spezze there will be NO open burning allowed on Friday, April 22, due to forecasted high winds and dry fuels creating a chance of higher fire danger.”

In the tinder-dry conditions and expected high winds, even a small campfire can quickly become a dangerous inferno.

The Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office noted that as we proceed into the weekend the forecast may hold some precipitation, so there is hope that fire danger will decrease.
