Update: I-70 eastbound opened around 1:00 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29 after an early morning hazardous waste spill closed both eastbound lanes. The spill took several hours to clear, while eastbound traffic was routed onto surface roads south and north of I-70. This has just been the latest in a summer and fall of repeated closures on I-70, much of it due to mud and debris slides in the areas hit by earlier wildfires.

Chaffee County may see more traffic on U.S. 285 and U.S. 24 today, caused by a closure on I-70 due to a hazardous materials spill earlier Friday morning. I-70 eastbound remains under an extended closure between Exit 171 and Exit 173, according to EC Alerts.

The Vail Daily is reporting that local traffic cameras show traffic backed up far past Dowd Junction. There is no estimated time of reopening.
