The Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center (HRRMC) keeps growing its staff and its leadership says that it still has a need for additional employees. The HRRMC Board of Directors met on Tuesday, August 18 in their monthly meeting. In the focus topic, Board Certified Urologist Dr. Cole Wiedel detailed the growth of his urology program at HRRMC. According to Dr. Wiedel, the volume of urology patients seen in a day has doubled in the past year.

With a shortage of urologists, particularly in rural Colorado, patients are coming from the Gunnison and the San Luis Valleys to HRRMC to see Dr. Wiedel. With extremely high demand, patients (except in urgent cases) need to wait eight to nine weeks for an appointment. With more support staff Dr. Wiedel thought they could serve more patients and reduce wait times. According to Wiedel, staff, from nurses to therapists to technicians and assistants, are hard to come by.  HRRMC has dozens of full time, benefited, job openings on their job board

Fortunately, some help is on the way, and at the Buena Vista Health Center it’s a homecoming of sorts. Buena Vista native, Family Physician Dr. Anna Jones is returning to practice medicine in the community where she grew up. HRRMC CEO Bob Morasko said, “We are very pleased to welcome Dr. Anna Jones aboard at our health center and walk-in clinic in Buena Vista. Buena  Vista is a prevalent area for local families and visitors alike, and we are proud to have an experienced provider who is also a local to the area readily available to our rural community.” Morasko echoed those sentiments at the Board meeting where he highlighted Dr. Anna Jones joining the team.

Another Dr. Jones, Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Steven Jones joined the HRRMC Orthopedics department full time where he will specialize in joint replacements. Dr. Steven Jones has worked as a part-time provider since 2017, but he’s available full-time now – expanding the department’s reach and abilities.

Board-certified family nurse practitioner Sarah Stoit, FNP-C, also joined HRRMC in August. Stoit will focus on family medicine and primary care services at the Salida Health Center and Saguache Health Center (one day per week).

The recruitment and hiring of skilled medical providers continues as rural medical services remain a crucial community need.
