Dear Editor,

Dave Williams, Chaffee County Republican Party chair recently circulated a letter that asserted Keith Baker, had changed his political affiliation since his days in the military.  I don’t know if Keith was formerly a Republican, but if he was he is not alone in deciding to vote for Democrats this election or deciding to leave the Republican Party entirely.

In the past, the Republican platform had many ideals that could be supported.  In this election there is no platform, the party position is just to support Trump whatever he may do.   Consequently, for the first time ever large numbers of lifelong Republicans have decided the Republican Party has left them and they see no alternative but to vote Democratic.  They want to clean house eliminating Trump and his congressional enablers like Cory Gardner and Mitch McConnell.

Among the Republicans who have endorsed Joe Biden are: General Colin Powell; John McCain’s widow Cindy McCain; former Governor and Republican Presidential candidate John Kasich; four former Republican cabinet secretaries; former heads of the CIA and FBI, 489 former Generals, Admirals and National Security Advisors including a former Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs under Trump himself; dozens of Trump’s staffers who have worked with him up close; former RNC Chairman Michael Steele.  In addition, President Bush and Senator Romney have said they will not vote for Trump.

Just this past week, Admiral McRaven who commanded the special forces attack that killed [Osama] Bin Laden endorsed Biden. McRaven said he is pro-life and pro-second amendment but felt competent leadership was most important.

Also this past week a Christian Super Pac made up of Evangelical and Catholic leaders and entitled “Not Our Faith” launched ads against Trump.  Besides massive numbers of military and Christian leaders who are now voting for Biden, there is also The Lincoln Project.   This powerful group is made up of lifelong Republican strategists, people who have dedicated their entire lives to getting Republicans elected, and now they are supporting Biden and actively working to defeat Trump and other Republican congressional candidates.

It’s clear that any Chaffee County Republicans voting for Biden and other Democrats this election are in very fine company.
