When people think of Salida’s annual Art Walk, they first imagine fine art paintings, sculpture, and jewelry. However, being one of the first Creative Districts named in Colorado, Salida is also a scene for performing arts, and not just in its theaters and parks.

F Street Community Stage draws touring performers

Serendipitous things happen in Salida, usually by word of mouth. Traveling musician Howie Campbell and his wife Debbie had been playing up in Buena Vista when they heard that Salida was hosting Art Walk 2023. They connected with Mark Schoenecker at KHEN Radio, who put them in touch with Hannah Michaels, one of the organizers for the new community stage in the 200 block of F Street in Salida.

The Campbell’s choose a haunting melody for this short video clip drawn from Native American roots, performed on guitar, flute and percussion. Closing out their set, they headed next to Old Colorado City outside of Colorado Springs.

The “Magic Steve” Community Stage at 200 F Street in Salida is available free of charge to anyone who signs up. Professionals like the Campbell’s travel with their own high-quality sound equipment but those without can also arrange for a simple PA system donated by the Salida Circus.

Pop up performances

Buskers passing through town are a common sight throughout the summer on Salida’s F Street pedestrian plaza. Steel and blues guitarists, fiddlers and violinists are drawn to the street and its shady spots. Art Walk brings out local professional musicians as well.
