Though it may look a little different this year, Salida Creativity Lab (SCL) will host its fifth annual Asia Fest and Dragon Parade. Though it will not be held in-person, three events will be held virtually for community members to celebrate. Events include a front porch/outdoor decorating display contest, a virtual dragon parade, and virtual art show.

Inspired by the Mardi Gras porches in New Orleans, community members are invited to show their Salida spirit with Lunar New Year decorations. To participate, deck you front porch, door, patio, window or business for the Lunar New Year. Use lanterns, dragons, cherry blossoms or whatever inspires your appreciation for Asian Pacific culture and the new year.

Post, tag and share your photos via Facebook or send them directly to tina@salidacreativitylab.com  by February 26.  Participants may include their address so community members can admire decorations via a drive by. Guest judges will award gift cards to local businesses as prizes for third, second and first place. The community will also vote for a community favorite. Join in any time before the deadline of February 26 to be included in judging.

Over the last five years, many Salidans have joined in the Lunar New Year parade by making their own dragons. Dust off the one you have already made or make your own to join in on the 2021 Virtual Dragon Parade. Participants can make dragons with family or friends then star in their own mini parade.

Post or send photos and videos of your dragon in action to SCL tina@salidacreativitylab.com  by February 26. SCL will compile photos and short video clips to create the Virtual Dragon Parade. All participants will receive a Lunar New Year souvenir. SCL suggests looking at tutorials online via YouTube to create your dragon. Participants can also follow SCL for ideas on dragon construction.

K-12 students are invited to participate in the second annual Asia Fest Art Show. Participants can show their appreciation for Asian Pacific culture, scenery, nature, animals, people and more as they create a piece of artwork in a medium and size of their choosing.

Send photos with the students name, grade and medium to tina@salidacreativitylab.com  by February 26. Art will be compiled  into a virtual show. Participants will receive a souvenir and guest judges will award third, second and first place in each age category. Age categories are as follows:

  • Third through fifth grade
  • Sixth through eighth grade
