Starting on April 26, The U.S. Cable Rail project will begin near Penrose and is expected to last until late October of 2021. Working hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Mon. to Thurs. and 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Fridays. All construction schedules are weather dependent and subject to change.

This state-funded project entails installing new and replacing some aging cable rail barriers along a seven-mile stretch of U.S. 50 near the town of Penrose from MP 284..50 to MP 291 in Fremont County. The project is designed to increase driver safety by preventing cross-median crashes.

Cable rail is comprised of wires that absorb kinetic energy when hit by a vehicle. The rail flexes on contact, redirecting the vehicle along the median and thereby preventing it from hitting oncoming traffic. It is also faster and less expensive to replace than concrete barriers.

Other work to be performed includes installing a mow strip, regrading and seeding sections of the median, and making erosion control, drainage and safety improvements.

Traffic impacts include:

  • Some single lane closures will be in place within the project limits during daytime hours
  • Inside shoulder closures will exist during working hours
  • Two-way traffic will be maintained
  • Signs and flagger operations will be in place to safely direct traffic
  • No weekend or observed holiday work is expected
  • Lane closures and other traffic notices are posted weekly on COTrip.org.
