The 2020 Kent Haruf Memorial Writing Scholarship is now open for applicants. Entries and registration for this scholarship must be received by March 1, 2020, with the shortlist of finalists to be announced March 20, 2020.

The Kent Haruf Memorial Writing Scholarship is open to junior and senior high school students in Chaffee and Fremont Counties, Colorado. Awards are given for excellence in fiction and creative non-fiction writing. Students must be previously unpublished writers to participate. Writers may apply in one of four areas: Short Story, Novel Excerpt/Novella, Creative Nonfiction, and Playwriting.

The scholarship is sponsored by Cathy Haruf and the Salida Council for the Arts, in memory of the late Kent Haruf, Salida resident and best-selling author of The Tie That Binds, Where you Once Belonged , Plainsong, Eventide, Benediction, and Our Souls at Night, which was produced as a movie.

Finalists and parents will be honored at a Scholarship Awards Dinner to be held Sun. April 26, 2020 at the Salida Community Center. The winners will receive a cash prize presented by Cathy Haruf, the late author’s wife. The finalists will also participate in a writing workshop prior to the banquet, taught by a professional author.
