The Central Colorado Conservancy is sponsoring a public field program on a protected Poncha Springs South Arkansas River property on Sept. 13. The property owner worked with the Conservancy to protect the land and water in 2017 with a conservation easement.
The two-hour program, presented by Conservancy naturalist Sally Waterhouse, will explore the land’s history and ecology as well as the riparian landscape along the South Arkansas River and conservation/restoration work there. The property is home to a variety of songbirds, mammals and fish and is used for cattle grazing, supporting local food production.
Conservation easements are voluntary legal agreements between a landowner and the Conservancy, permanently limiting uses on the landscape and protecting identified conservation values. The Conservancy holds 36 conservation easements and owns two properties in central Colorado. The organization has helped protect over 10,000 acres since its inception in 2001.
The field program is designed for adults and children over 12 years of age and is limited to 12 participants. Participants will meet at 9:30 a.m. and the program will run until 11:30 a.m. The program is free for Central Colorado Conservancy members and $5 for non-members.
Pre-registration is required by emailing Andrew Mackie at andrew@centralcoloradoconservancy.org or calling 719-539-7700. Participants should expect to walk over uneven terrain and wet ground. Bring water, snacks, sunscreen and a hat. Binoculars are also suggested.
