Anyone claiming that there is nothing going on in the Arkansas River Valley this holiday season would be wrong. There is almost more going on in our county than a single person has time to get to. Here’s a small sampling:

Farmers Market at the Scout Hut

It’s winter time and the Salida park location for the Farmers Market is a bit chilly. So beginning Saturday, Dec. 8, the Farmers Market will hold a public market at the Scout Hut 210 E. Sackett, Salida. That same day and down stairs, from the Farmer’s Market at the Scout Hut, Mountain Mama’s will host a children’s event.

Ski Patrol Book Launch at Salida SteamPlant

The “Ski Patrol in Colorado” public book launch evening begins at 6:00 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8 at the SteamPlant, 220 W. Sackett, in Salida. The free event features members of the Colorado Ski Patrol who have written a book about their rescue adventures. The launch includes a slideshow presentation by members of the Patrol, food, coffee, beer, and camaraderie.

Christmas Mountain Run

The Chaffee County Running Club will hold its annual evening run beginning at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9. The free public event will meet at the Caboose at the F Street Bridge in Salida for a roughly four mile run. The run will go to the top of “S” Mountain (also known as Tenderfoot Mountain) and back down again.

Organizers say the pace will be “casual” and runners of all ages and abilities are encouraged to join in. They do encourage participants to bring their headlamps and wear their favorite Christmas sweater or holiday-themed attire, as well as a running friend.

An Evening in South Sudan

A public event with refreshments, sponsored by the Salida Circus Outreach Foundation and the Salida Circus begins at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9 and runs until 6:00 p.m, at Box of Bubbles 206 E. Street/135 East 2nd St., Salida. Ngor Abiar, from Project Education Sudan will present a program focused on his groups efforts to bring educational opportunity to the children of his country,y which in past decades was ripped part by civil unrest that continues to this day to affect children’s opportunities to frame a better life. The event is free but donations to Project Education South Sudan will be accepted. For more information, go to www.projecteducationsouthsudan.org.

New Year’s Day 5K

A morning event at the Scout Hut, 210 E. Sackett, Salida on New Year’s Day is guaranteed to get your 2019 off to a brisk, running start. The Tuesday, Jan.1 public New Year’s Day 5K is co-sponsored by 7,000 FEET Running Company, Salida Recreation and the Hot Springs Aquatic Center. Registration begins at 9:00 A.M. And the event wraps up at noon. Individual runners, families, kids in strollers, are welcome at this family-friendly event. The vent kicks off the 2019 Salida Winter Challenge and costumes are “highly encouraged.”

Salida Women’s Singing Circle

Beginning Jan 4 on Friday’s at 5:30, this weekly gathering called the Salida Women’s Singing Circle is open to the public. Women interested in gathering to “Connect with other women through song” should show up at YogaTonic, located at 132 E. First Street in Salida.
