County-Wide 2021 Poinsettia Sales Have Funded New Offerings

The League of Women Voters of Chaffee County (LWVCC) is planning new 2022 program offerings designed to explore major local, state, and national issues. The nonpartisan political organization is open to all people of voting age, members of all political parties, and unaffiliated voters.

Partially funded through the League’s successful 2021 annual poinsettia sale, this year’s programs will include monthly presentations on topics of interest to the community, the popular Great Decisions series collaboration with Buena Vista Library that features prominent speakers, and the meet and greet Drinks and Dialogue events.

Marjie Gray, LWVCC Leadership chair, noted, “We’re excited about this year’s schedule of events and are grateful to the community and all of our volunteers for making our programs possible through our plant sales, donations and membership dues.”

She added that at the Monday, January 10 Membership Meeting, the report on the December poinsettia sales was the most impressive ever. According to the plant sale coordinators Ellen Olson and Jean Gabardi, total sales of nearly $4,500—including cash donations of almost $300–were the highest ever achieved. Gabardi reported that “Although we added Christmas cacti to our offerings this year, the perennial best-seller remained the small red poinsettia. We also think that adding the option of PayPal helped sales.”

Both Olson and Gabardi attribute the sales success to not only the individual plant buyers, but also the 20 local businesses and organizations that supported the sales. “We are so grateful for the use of the facilities provided by St. George’s Episcopal Church in Leadville, the Congregational United Church of Christ in Buena Vista and the First United Methodist Church in Salida. They allow us to continue to provide our minimal contact distribution,” noted Olson.

Other sponsors and sales supporters included, 1st Colorado Land office, Amy’s Hair Salon, Buena Vista Drug, Buena Vista Town Hall, Central Colorado Kitchens, CKS Main Street, Collegiate Peaks Realty, Ryan Muller DDS, Full Circle Realty, High Country Bank, Jan’s Restaurant, Legacy Bank, Push & Pull, Rock Run Gallery, Rustic Woods, Sundance and Friends, and TBK Bank.

Next on the agenda for the plant sales coordinators is the May 2022 annual geranium sale.

The League encourages informed and active participation in government; works to increase understanding of major public policy issues; influences public policy through education and advocacy; and holds public meetings to present and discuss local issues.
