A skier has died as the result of injuries suffered during a skiing accident on March 4. The skier has been identified as 75-year-old Elise Backinger of Poncha Springs.

A statement released by Monarch Mountain on Wednesday, March 4 reads; “Approximately 10:45 a.m. today, a female skier was involved in an incident on the Shagnasty ski trail at Monarch Mountain. Ski patrollers were in the area and responded immediately. The skier was wearing a helmet and was alert when they arrived.”

“She was transported to Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center in Salida and was then transported by REACH Air Medical Services,” continues the release. “She was pronounced dead enroute to UC Health Memorial Medical Central in Colorado Springs.”

“We are heartbroken by the news of the incident. Monarch is small ski area, and everyone here is family. The skier had been a longtime local friend here at Monarch and we are devastated. Our deepest condolences go out to all her loved ones,” said ski area General Manager Randy Stroud.
