The construction of the new Buena Vista Middle School and High School has moved into the steel phase. Buena Vista School District Superintendent Lisa Yates updated the school board at the Buena Vista School District meeting on Monday evening. Steel beam construction is part of Phase 1, which runs into December 2019.

Yates reiterated the school district’s intention of maximizing local contract work.

“Using local contractors is a high priority,” said Yates.

The school board also fielded a public comment from Buena Vista resident, Pyra Intihar, who voiced concerns over the Buena Vista High School ‘Demon’ mascot.

Intihar raised the point that the ‘demon’ is a religious figure in the Christian, Hindu, Islamic and Jewish faiths. As a result, said Intihar, the mascot being a ‘demon’ is a violation of the ‘Separation of Church and State’ protocol in the United States Constitution.

Intihar pointed out that now is the best time to change the mascot as it coincides with the new school construction.

The school board heard Intihar’s comments and thanked her for her statement. No additional discussion followed, and the school board continued the meeting without any further acknowledgment to the mascot change.
